Hello & Welcome

Hi, I’m Chad Bordwell. I've been working in the game industry since 1997. I've shipped over 10 AAA titles, such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Jedi Knight: Outcast, Quake4, Assassin's Creed: Unity, and Farcry 5 & 6.

Primarily my roles in the industry have been in game design, level design, and mission scripting for single player and cooperative game play. The majority of my shipped titles have released on Playstation, Xbox, and PC.

If you're interested in my skill set for your company please contact me through LinkedIn or visit the contact page for my most current contact information.
Thanks for stopping by.

Something Wicked Games Layoffs

 Hi Folks,

Yeah unfortunately Something Wicked Games laid off most of the company including myself.  They're calling it a temporary layoff which means they could call us back.  It also means I technically have to resign if I find a new job.  In reality it's a way for then to not pay reverence and still lay people off.

I do hope they find a publisher however.  SWG was a great team and I enjoyed working with them.  So I wish them luck in locking down a publisher to get that project back on track.

In the meantime I'm going to start looking for my new gig.  The industry is in quite a state at the moment so this could be a challenge.  We shall see.

Squanch Games Cuts Ties With Justin Roiland

Squanch Games shared this message today.

It's a sad situation for the team who worked hard and made a successful game, but will now suffer from their association to him. I enjoyed the one year I contracted with the team at Squanch. They are a great group that deserves success. I hope they can recover from this.

Adult Swim also announced cutting ties with Roiland, buit will continue Rick and Morty with a new voice actor.

Accepted a Design role at Something Wicked Games

I'm happy yo announce I've accepted a Senior Level Design role a Something Wicked Games!

Something Wicked is a new company created by industry veterans that have brought us games like Fallout 3 & 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.  These are many of the games I love so I'm very excited to be a part of their upcoming project Wyrdsong.

Wyrdsong has just started development so there isn't much I can say but I can show you some teasers that have been made public.

They've also released some equally moody concept art.

Squanch Games Reveals High On Life

Hey everyone.  As you may know Squanch Games is a company lead by Rick & Morty creator Justin Roiland.  They finally revealed the title I was working on with them in 2020.  It's called High On Life about an alien cartel that is selling humans as drugs for aliens.  So you and some talking guns team up to take them down.

Looking at the trailer I see some familiar things and also some great new stuff!  Hope they don't forget about me in the credits, but seriously Squanch was a fun group of people.  Glad to see the game is alive and doing well.  Can't wait to play it.

Check out the trailer!

Farcry 6 Shipped Today!

Since I left the project before it finished I wasn't sure if they would credit me or not. It appears that I did make the credits however.

While I was there I was the game designer and my main focus was on the new Outpost system. I'm not familiar with the shipped version but the version I was working on was each Outpost had an objective which players could choose to got for or not for bonus rewards.  So if you wanted to get the objective you might need to sneak in stealthy or use only explosives, etc.  But if you wanted to do the old kill everyone to concur an outpost you could do that too.  But not sure what shipped.

Anyway, congratz to the team and I guess to myself.  haha

Making the Jump to Lead Designer

I have always steered clear of lead roles and after 25 years in the industry people start to look at you funny.  But to me a lead role is a different job, a people managing job.  I got into the game industry to make games, not manage people.  Most of the leads I knew barely knew how to open the editor the team used.  I didn't want to be that person.

However when I started at Lost Boys as a Senior Designer they immediately approached me about being the Design Lead of the project.  At first I was pretty reluctant but they said give it a try.  If it works out great, if not I'm still a Senior Designer.  So I thought what the hell, the industry expects this move out of people after a number of years and this was a great way to see if it would work for me.

After 5 months in the role I'm shocked to say I really enjoy it!  I'm in fact kicking myself that I didn't make the move sooner.  I've been a senior designer so long I didn't even realize I was in a rut.  Now with the new role and responsibilities work seems fresh and exciting again!

I can't wait to share what I'm working on, but for now I'd really love to thank Chase at Lost Boys for offering this opportunity to me.  And for doing it in such a way that didn't intimidate me from taking it.

New Contract Signed

Just signed a new contract with Lost Boys Interactive. As usual I can't talk about what we'll be working on but really looking forward to the project.

Lost Boys is an independent developer with two locations, Austin Texas and my old Raven stomping grounds Madison Wisconsin. But I'll still be working remotely here in Toronto under my company Dark Arts Development.

Goodbye to Squanch Games

As we approach March my one year contract with Squanch Games comes to an end.  It's been a pleasure working with the team there.  As you'd expect from a company created by Justin Roiland it was a lot of laughs.  Squanch has such a unique team whom certainly work by the beat of their own drum.

Squanch was my first excursion into the indie game dev space after 20+ years of AAA which was quite an experience.  My contract was a remote one that began before COVID even hit, so I was working remote before it was cool.  There was plans to go to LA and meet the team, which unfortunately was not able to happen.  It would have been nice to see everyone face to face.

So goodbye Squanch, I wish them great luck with their title and look forward to its release.

LinkedIn Company Page - CHECK

Finally put together a company page for Dark Arts Development Inc over on LinkedIn.  After a year of contracting it looks like I'm going to continue so might as well make it official.

And to go with this I began the creation of an official Dark Arts Development web page.  It's currently under construction but it's a start.

My Current Contract Information

 Hi!

With the start of the new year I've been contacted by many companies asking if I'm interested in new roles.  My current situation is I'm under contract with Squanch Games until March 16th.  So far they have not expressed whether they are interested in renewing the contract or not.

Although my current contract does allow me to work with other companies I've found most prefer that I work exclusively with them so until March that would not be possible.

That being said feel free to contact me if your company is interested in working with me before my contract ends or if you'd like to talk about roles starting after March 16th.

Thanks for your interest and have a great new year!

Squanch Games WON'T Be doing VR in the Next Game

Since I started working at Squanch I've been asked this question a lot.  Will the next game be VR.  Of course I wasn't allowed to talk about the project, but Squanch CEO Tanya Watson publicly gave the answer.  Nope.

There's no need for me to regurgitate the article so go read it for yourself.

Squanch Games Shelves VR

Farcry 6

Here is the project I was working on when I left Ubisoft.  In Farcry 6 you can expect the typical Farcry experience this time based in a Cuba-like world .  If you're a fan of the past Farcry games then here comes some more of it.  Glad to see people seem excited for it.

Ubisoft News & Recent Harassment Allegations

As I'm sure many of you are aware Ubisoft has had some issues come to light regarding employee allegations of harassment and poor management.  If not you can follow the link. HERE to learn more.

I worked at Ubisoft Toronto for 8 years and worked with some of the individuals in question.  That being said I do not find these allegations surprising. The writing was on the wall for a long time with this individual and no action was taken.  Seeing interactions between this person and others from the outside I couldn't tell if they were welcomed or not.  I suspected issues (from seeing him following various women around like a puppy) but I never witnessed more.  However I also didn't attended company social gatherings.

Ubisoft Toronto in my opinion spent WAY too much money on booze and parties.  They had an after hours party in the building once a month as well as individual team parties after most milestones.  With multiple team this was a lot of partying.  All parties included beer and many times hard liqueur. I rarely attended these because I had a long commute and could never see how I could party then drive the hour home.  I would much rather the money had been given as an employee bonus instead, so we all could enjoy the rewards.  Plus we now see that these parties gave potential office predators a prime hunting ground.

For me personally I found HR at Ubisoft to be a COMPLETE failure as a place to go when you're having personal or career issues.  For instance I entered the game industry to make games, not to become a manager.  However I found Ubisoft unable to handle a veteran developer uninterested in moving into management.   It seemed if you're content in your role you will be replaced.  I went to HR about these issues and look, I don't work there anymore.  Guess how that went?  Of course these issues I encountered are nothing compared to the sexual harassment others encountered working there.

So now that this dirt is all out there in the public eye, management is suddenly very concerned.  CEO Yves Guillemot made a statement about how shocked he is and how change needs to happen.  His statement HERE.

In closing I'm thrilled to no longer be employed at Ubisoft Toronto and am truly saddened to hear some of my co-workers had to endure this type of treatment daily. ALL events at Ubisoft Toronto were ravenously tweeted and posted on Instagram for the "Look how awesome we are." PR pieces.  I don't think an event would happen at UbiTor if it couldn't be part of a PR spin.  UbiTor worked hard to publicly created an image of being at the forefront of equality & LGBTQ issues in the gaming industry, but internally failed to uphold these beliefs.

UPDATE: And the news continues.  Serge and Yannis also stepped down as well as the head of HR Cecile Cornet.  Serge was the guy that made all the go/no go calls for most if not all Ubisoft titles.  Yannis was the president of Ubisoft Canada.  I would assume Cecile resigned for protecting them instead of taking action however that is just my speculation.

Read more HERE

NOTE: HR is there to help the company.  The company signs their pay checks, their job is to protect them.  They aren't there to help employees with their problems.  They're there to stop employee problems from hurting the company.  Be on your guard, question the things they say.  My girlfriend went to her company HR department about a harassment issue.  They express how important it was that she came to them and scheduled a meeting with her for the next day.  Magically she was "laid off" that afternoon.  Was it wrong and illegal?  Sure but it still happened and she didn't have the funds to fight it.  So really consider that before going to them with an issue.  I'm not saying don't address the issues with them, I'm saying be prepared.  HR is not your friend.

Time to Announce a Squanchy Career Change

I'm pretty excited to share that I have accepted  a contract role as a Senior Level Designer for Squanch Games to work on an unannounced title.  You may know Squanch Games as the company started by Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick & Morty.  Their most recent shipped title was Trover Saves the Universe which I personally loved.

Also in more exciting news since I've chosen to work remotely here in Toronto.  Because of this I needed to start my own corporation due to international legal mumbo jumbo. So I registered one in Ontario and called Dark Arts Development Inc.  That technically this means I've also created my own game company!  So far 2020 is looking pretty exciting.

I'd also like to thank Ubisoft Toronto for inadvertently forcing me out of the dead end job doldrums I was stuck in while working there.  Making the same title again and again and again, that's the stuff which crushes your creative soul. So thanks for not caring and good luck to those still trapped in the Ubi "game factory."

Ubisoft & Coffee Gripe

So this is kind of a dumb thing but it bugs me. I've been around the industry for awhile & worked at several companies.Usually the studio wants to encourage you to be at your job, happy, and working.  So they offer little perks.  Raven for instance had free coffee and free soda 24/7.  Gray Matter was really over the top. They had a full stocked fridge and would go get anything you wanted upon request.  Hell they even bought me a pillow and blanket so I could sleep on the floor of my office.  But the standard at all companies I've been at is free coffee.

Ubisoft however doesn't really give you free anything.  Sometimes they have fruit. But snacks, coffee, soda, are all through vending machines.  And pretty high priced vending machines.  A candy bar would cost you $1.50, chips $1.25, and a can of soda $1.  So screw that, we'd go out for coffee.  Going out gives you a chance to step away from the monitors and take a breather.  Since Ubisoft has around 800 employees several coffee shops sprung up within walking distance. So you also were supporting the local economy which is the whole point of Ontario giving them tax breaks, to help boost business overall.

Now I see Ubisoft Toronto added an "in house" coffee shop.  Not a free coffee shop, hell no.  A full fledged pay for coffee and pastries coffee shop, with a freakin' menus on the wall and everything.  What the actual fuck??

It totally reminds me of the old mining companies that would setup a town around the mine.  Then charge their workers for food, rent, supplies, medical care, which was basically taking back the money they pay them.  I believe these practices were deemed illegal?  lol

Then there are all those local coffee shops.  They will be going out of business shortly.  That's gonna be a huge hit on their livelihood. So much for supporting the local economy.

But seriously not cool.  Just have plain standard FREE coffee machines in-house, then let people go to the local businesses for the special coffees and pastries. Their employees work long and hard, literally making Ubisoft millions of dollars. Buy them a fucking cup of coffee.

Better Late Than Never

I finally bought a Nintendo Switch.

I've never been a Nintendo guy, I was Team Sega.  Master System, Genesis, Dreamcast, that was my jam.  Nintendo was always I little too family friendly for my liking.  I wanted games with an edge. Ironically though the Nintendo games I loved were freakin' Pokemon & Animal Crossing which aren't very edgy at all. haha

But the Nintendo Switch is different.  As we all now know it offers loads of games from all kinds of developers & it's super convenient as a hand held or living room console.  So I wanted one.  I'm a sucker for special editions and jumped on the Animal Crossing Edition when it went up for sale at midnight.  Luckily I got one!  Now I just have to wait for March. But I'm pretty excited to finally get one.

My girlfriend was not impressed.  She said it looks like it's for babies. But I explained to her that the cute raccoons on the dock are Tom Nook and his nephews.  He's basically a slum lord asshole that takes all your money.  lol

Check Out This Position. Crazy!

I saw this position posted for a level designer at Fat Shark. CLICK

Application details
Location: Stockholm
Form of Employment: Temporary position
Start date: February 2020
End Date: September 2020

Since this is an on-site & temporary position, we will unfortunately not be able to provide any relocation assistance and won't be considering applications for remote work.

We will be reviewing applications and interviewing candidates continuously throughout the application period.

So they aren't accepting remote work. They aren't going to help you move to Sweden. And after a complete relocation out of your own pocket they're letting you go after 8 months. Seemingly the reward is for the privilege of working with them??

They should just accept remote work if they aren't willing to pay for relocation.  You just know some desperate kid is going to try to make this work.
